Those steam packets were larger ships than the sailing packet and Howth harbour became increasingly unsuitable for this kind of ships. The smaller shallower harbour at Howth was forgotten about for twenty years thereafter.
Today Howth the biggest fishing port on the east coast, and Howth has become very popular spot for all foreign tourists visiting Ireland wanting a day out near Dublin. The nobility and gentry of Dublin were all waiting for his arrival at Dun Laoghaire Harbour. Banners flew and bands played, and a crowd estimated at , awaited the British monarch.

Even though all of the Howth Cilff Walk routes are fairly straightforward and well-signed, you should always bring a map when walking in remote areas.

Trail is well marked in clockwise direction with purple arrows. About m from the end you have to turn left at the sign for Dart station although I didn't notice a purple arrow here. Trail measured almost exactly 12km on my Garmin. Lovely walk, well marked! On a day of good weather runners are fine , but if it has been raining I would imagine you would need to wear the correct footwear.
