The Puritans followed a man named John Calvin. Human beings were depraved sinners. The rest of humanity was condemned to eternal damnation.

Anne Bradstreet was a devout Puritan and she often wrote about it in her poetry. She talked about the Puritan views on salvation and redemption in her poetry. She basically says that God is punishing her by burning down her house because she is too wrapped up in the worldly things around her.

She says that God took her house away from her to help make her more spiritually ready to receive the ultimate prize of heaven.
