This was originally posted as part of the Workshop Tote Sew Along. Want to make a tote too? Gather Supplies First up, the webbing! I usually buy mine from JoAnn Fabrics it's in the notions area , but your local quilt shop may carry it, and you can always find it on Etsy. RIT dye can be used a few different ways, but my preferred method is on the stove.

I find that I get more intense, even colors. I also like the liquid RIT Dye versus the powdered, because it's much less messy. Plus it's easier to save and store the leftover liquid dye which you'll have plenty of! It is important to use a pot and tools that are only for dyeing. I picked up this little pot at the thrift store for a few bucks, and my measuring spoons from the dollar store.

In this tutorial I used a small electric burner from Walmart , but you can of course use your stove! You'll also need some plastic gloves, dish soap I love original blue Dawn for dyeing , table salt, a plastic container or small bucket and a spoon to stir with. And don't forget to protect your workspace! On the other hand, Dylon Multi-Purpose dye is like Rit All-Purpose dye; both contain a mixture of dye types, including acid dyes, so both can work on nylon if used with vinegar. Will Rit dye stain my washer?

Nonetheless, we can promise you Rit won't permanently stain any metal component on your machine. We even launched liquid dye just so that it would be easier to use Rit in your machine. With that much history, you can feel confident that your washing machine will stay dye free for decades to come.

Solid nylon can be dyed with the same types of dye as nylon fabric. Jacquard Acid Dyes are concentrated, powdered, hot water dyes that produce the most vibrant possible results on protein fibers including silk, wool, cashmere, alpaca, feathers, and most nylons.

Nylon is a synthetic fiber, but its unique chemistry means that it can be dyed, easily and well, using the same acid dyes that are commonly used on wool and other animal fibers. A typical recipe calls for dissolving dye and salt in enough water to cover the material and allow it to move freely in the pot, adding the material, heat it to a simmer for ten minutes, add vinegar and simmer another ten minutes, then allow to cool gradually and rinse out.

Microwaving or steaming might be used as an alternative form of heat application, if the dye is painted onto vinegar-water-soaked material, as in the case of tie-dyeing nylon. See Dyes for Protein Fibers , under the About Dyes section of this web site, for the rest of the story. Do not expect a color mixed from two or more dyes to produce the same hue on nylon that it does on silk or wool.

If you call your dye suppliers, they should be able to recommend specific acid dyes that they sell that work particularly well on nylon, and tell you whether they discharge well or poorly.
